Northwest Pennsylvania Fish Report – January 2nd, 2015

Lake Erie tributaries — The “Mile” streams on the east side contained steelhead through mid-December although angler pressure was low. As conditions allowed, shore anglers were catching steelhead at the mouth of Trout and Godfrey runs and Walnut Creek. Anglers are reminded to stay 50 yards from the mouths of Trout and Godfrey runs (nursery waters) between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. State hatchery workers were taking steelhead from Trout Run in early December to collect eggs. Some fish were then transported to upper Walnut. Lower Walnut and Elk Creek were yielding nice catches of steelhead, as conditions allowed. A few fresh fish were reported in the Walnut access area, but sizes were running small. As of Dec. 12, black and white Wooly Buggers, Crystal Meth, pink and white Sucker Spawn, and single eggs were productive, as were skein, white and pink egg sacs, and minnows.

Presque Isle Bay (Erie County) — Panfish were hitting off the docks in Marina Lake and also along the bayfront. The East and West piers were producing perch. A 2.5-pound largemouth bass was reported on a crankbait but the bite was overall very slow.

French Creek (Erie, Mercer, Crawford, Venango counties ) — As conditions allowed, walleyes up to 27 inches were hitting, with anglers reporting success on chartreuse floater jigs tipped with creek chubs and white floating jig heads. Northern pike also were reported.

Pymatuning Reservoir (Crawford County) — Some anglers were catching walleyes through Dec. 15 on bladebaits in the Snodgrass area. Bluegills and small crappies were reported off Jamestown marina docks. Crappies and a few walleyes also were reported in the Shenango River downstream of the dam.

Conneaut Lake (Crawford County) — This natural lake was yielding northern pike through early December.

Shenango Reservoir (Mercer County) — Numbers of crappies in mixed sizes up to 11 inches were reported on jig-and-plastic combinations under small bobbers.

Shenango River (Mercer County) — Catfish and carp were reported on minnows by anglers targeting walleyes. Crappies, most of which were small, were reported on tiny jigs tipped with maggots as of Dec. 15.

Allegheny River (Venango County) — Smallmouth bass up to 6 pounds and some nice walleyes up to 9 pounds were reported through Dec. 9, on live baits and artificials, including suspending jerkbaits, jig-n-plastic grubs, and hair jigs.

Kahle Lake (Clarion County) — Panfish and a few bass were reported in early to mid-December, with small maggot-tipped jigs the ticket.

Allegheny River (Clarion County) — Walleyes were biting minnows in recent weeks. A few large muskies also were reported.

Piney Dam (Clarion County) — As of Dec. 10, anglers were still catching nice perch and a few walleyes on minnows and crawlers.

Piney Creek (Clarion County) — The delayed-harvest, artificial-lures- only stretch was yielding trout on flies and lures in recent weeks.
