Southern Lower Peninsula Fishing Report – August 16th, 2013, 2013

Lake St. Clair

The muskie bite on Lake St. Clair has been hot on the Canadian side of the lake, at the Belle River hump, and five miles behind the St. Clair Light. Bass fishing has been good all over the lake, but walleye fishing has been slow.

Saginaw Bay Area

Walleye fishing has been good on Saginaw Bay. The best action has come to anglers trolling crawler harnesses in 18 to 22 feet of water outside the pencil buoys. Crankbaits and crawler harnesses have both caught fish. The perch bite should heat up any day now.

Brighton Area

Bass fishing has been good on Chemung, Woodland, Strawberry, and Zukey lakes. Bluegills are hitting crickets, leaf worms, and wax worms fished along the weedbeds on Thompson, Strawberry, and Whitmore lakes. A few walleyes have been caught at night on Woodland and Whitmore lakes. Crawler harnesses and Rapalas have been the hot baits.

Allegan Area

Salmon have moved out to deeper water in Lake Michigan at St. Joseph. The best action has come to anglers fishing in 90 to 200 feet of water, 40 to 70 feet down. Perch fishing has been decent on Lake Michigan. Anglers fishing in 19 to 35 feet of water report a good bite off the town of Glenn. Steelhead fishing has been slow in the Kalamazoo River. The best action is coming to anglers fishing egg-sucking leeches in the tributary streams. Great Bear and Bloomingdale lakes are providing some good bluegill action.

South Haven

Anglers in South Haven are getting some lake trout, cohos, and steelhead in Lake Michigan in 90 to 140 feet of water. Spoons and flies are taking those fish. Pier fishermen have been catching steelhead in the mornings at St. Joe and South Haven on shrimp and spoons. One angler landed three lake trout off the South Haven pier, the largest weighing 11 pounds.

Kalamazoo Area

Bluegill fishermen are finding good numbers of fish suspended over deeper water. Good lakes have been Gourdneck, Brandywine, Swan, Duck, Long, Cloverdale, Fish, Jeptha, and Portage. There are some big catfish biting at night on the Kalamazoo River below the Allegan Dam. One 31-pounder was caught last week, along with several in the 10- to 20-pound range. Bluegills, shiners, and cut bait are taking those fish. Bass fishermen are having some luck with topwater baits fished in the mornings on Twin Lakes, Lake of the Woods, Maple, Gull, Saddlebag, and Klinger lakes.

Grand Haven Area

Salmon fishing has been very good on Lake Michigan in 80 to 120 feet of water. Pier fishing has been good for steelhead and perch. Steelies are hitting alewives and shrimp, and minnows are taking the perch. Reports indicate pike and panfish are hitting in the bayous.
