Northwest Minnesota Fishing Report – July 5th, 2013

ALEXANDRIA AREA

Walleyes are hitting crawlers and leeches during the day or crankbaits at night on Lake Mary in 10 to 12 feet, Lake Miltona in 14 to 16 feet, and Lake Reno in 12 to 14 feet. Tube jigs or small jigs and minnows are producing crappies in the thick cabbage of Lake Darling, Lake Carlos, and Lake Le Homme Dieu. Sunfish and bass have started to move from the shallows and set up along weed edges on most lakes and muskie anglers are raising fish on Miltona in 10 to 12 feet.

BATTLE LAKE

Bluegills remain active in eight to 11 feet on West Battle Lake, East Battle Lake, South Turtle Lake, and Clitherall Lake. Walleyes are taking leeches and live-bait rigs in 12 to 18 feet on Otter Tail Lake, Walker Lake, and West Battle. Northern pike and bass are hitting on the weedlines of most lakes and muskie reports have been limited.

DETROIT LAKES

Walleyes are hitting live-bait rigs tipped with leeches or nightcrawlers  from the 12-foot weedlines out to 20 feet on Lake Melissa, Lake Sallie, Upper Cormorant Lake, Pelican Lake, and Big Cormorant Lake. Throw BullDawgs in shallow water on Pelican and Big Detroit for muskies and most lakes are kicking out numbers of bass and northern pike in eight to 12 feet. Look for a mixed bag of panfish in 10 to 14 feet on Floyd Lake, Deadshot Bay, Melissa, and Sallie.

PARK RAPIDS AREA

Leeches and crawlers are producing walleyes in 16 to 18 feet on Long Lake, Fish Hook Lake, and Big Sand Lake. Work the Crow Wing Chain of Lakes in six to eight feet for panfish or 10 to 12 feet for northern pike. Potato Lake remains a safe bet for smallmouth bass in 10 to 14 feet and muskies are chasing surface baits on Big Mantrap Lake.

PERHAM AREA

Spinners and crawlers are turning walleyes in 22 to 30 feet at Rush Lake and Little Pine Lake. Minnows and crawlers are working best for walleyes at Big Pine Lake in eight to 12 feet. Work the edges of the bulrushes or shallow weed edges of Buchanan Lake, Star Lake, Dead Lake, Big Pine, and Rush for panfish. Northern pike and bass are hitting spinnerbaits on the weedlines on all lakes.
