October muzzleloader hunt gets green light
Columbus – Despite public opposition to the plan, the Ohio Wildlife Council on Wednesday approved a new antlerless muzzleloader season for October and eliminated the bonus gun weekend for deer in December.
The vote was unanimous on the eight-member board.
Sen. Chris Widener (R-Springfield) has led a legislative charge to prevent some of the changes to the deer hunting regulations. The senator said he will continue to fight when the DNR submits the rules to the legislature’s Joint Committee for Agency Rule Review (JCARR) for final approval.
As it stands, the antlerless only muzzleloader season will be held Oct. 12-13.
The Wildlife Council also approved county-based bag limits and allowing gun hunters to hunt deer 30 minutes after sunset.
