BREAKING NEWS: First CWD deer confirmed in DuPage County, Illinois

Chronic wasting disease found in a DuPage County deer represents the first CWD case there, expanding the list of Illinois counties with a positive case from 10 to 11.

Tom Micetich, DNR Deer Project Manager, confirmed the CWD deer today. He said the source was a Deer Population Control Permit issued to the Forest Preserve District.

"We ask that all animals older than fawn be tested for CWD," Micetich said.

The deer was reportedly found in the Mallard Lake Forest Preserve next to Hanover Park. The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County is working with DNR to further test deer in the area.

“There is no threat to the public’s health or safety,” Forest Preserve District’s ecologist Brian Kraskiewicz told reporters. “However, we’ll be working with the IDNR to test additional deer to determine if this was an anomaly or if there is an issue among the [deer] herd."
