Northern Lower Peninsula Fishing Report – December 7th, 2012

Indian River

The firearms deer season was very good in Cheboygan County. Hunters killed lots of deer, including several decent bucks. Deer numbers appear to be up in the area, and the muzzleloading and late archery seasons should be pretty good. Fishing pressure has been light on Burt, Black, and Mullett lakes, as most sportsmen have been hunting.

Traverse City Area

The firearms deer season was a little better than past years, with good numbers of deer in the area. The late seasons should be decent, too. Steelhead fishing has been pretty good on the Boardman and Elk rivers. Wigglers and flies have been producing the best results. High winds have kept anglers off the big water of  Grand Traverse Bay.

Cadillac Area

The firearms deer season was pretty good in Wexford County, and deer numbers appear to be up a little. Fishing pressure has been very light. A few anglers have been casting crankbaits at night and catching walleyes in the channel between lakes Mitchell and Cadillac.

Grayling Area

Fishing pressure has been very light in Crawford County as most sportsmen in the area have been deer hunting. The firearms deer season has been pretty good. Deer hunting has slowed, but the muzzleloader season should be good.There are still a lot of deer in the area.

Higgins Lake Area

The firearms deer season was fair in  Roscommon County with a few big bucks being killed. Hunting pressure was light, and there wasn’t a lot of shooting. There has been no fishing pressure on Higgins Lake.

Oscoda Area

Firearms deer hunters reported pretty high success in Iosco County. Deer numbers appear to be up in the area. Steelhead fishing has been very good in the Au Sable River from the mouth of the river all the way up to Foote Dam. The best action has come to anglers drifting spawn bags. A few whitefish have been caught on wax worms fished off the pier in Lake Michigan.
