Upper Peninsula Fishing Report – October 26th, 2012

Pickford Area

Fishing pressure has been light in the eastern U.P. with wet, windy weather keeping anglers grounded. Perch are hitting in Lake Michigan at Cedarville, and walleye fishing has been good in Raber Bay, but the water is low and launching a boat can be difficult. Bear hunting season was pretty good. Archery deer season is off to a good start. Grouse and woodcock hunting has been good and flush rates are up. Waterfowl hunting also has been good.

Curtis Area

When the wind allows anglers to get out, walleye fishing has been very good on Big and South Manistique lakes. Minnows fished in the shallows around dusk have produced the best action. Bear hunting season was good. A couple big boars were killed in the area.  Grouse hunting has been good and the leaves are down. Deer hunting has been slow because of high winds. A few flight birds are arriving, and waterfowlers report good gunning.

Garden Area

Bass fishing has been pretty good in Lake Michigan’s Big Bay de Noc. Sucker minnows have produced the best action. Perch fishing should kick in any day now, but walleye fishing has been slow. The bear-hunting season was good. Grouse and woodcock hunting has been good, and flush rates are up. Leaves are falling fast. Early archery deer season has been fair so far this season.

Escanaba Area

High wind and rain have pretty much kept anglers off Lake Michigan’s Little Bay de Noc. Shore anglers report catching perch in Escanaba Harbor. Minnows fished in the shallows are producing the best results. Leaves are falling, and grouse and woodcock hunting is improving. Archery deer season has been decent, and the bear season was good. Waterfowl hunting has been fair.

Keweenaw Peninsula

Bass fishing has been good on Lac LaBelle and Lake Medora. A fair number of splake have been caught in Lake Superior’s Copper Harbor, but anglers are having to work to find them. Bear-hunting season was good, and grouse and woodcock hunters report pretty good flush rates.

Ontonagon Area

Lake trout fishing remains pretty good in Lake Superior, but fishing pressure has been light. Leaves are falling, and grouse and woodcock hunting should improve. Deer hunting has been fair. Bucks are getting antsy.
