St. Paul — After Kelly Kallok shot her first deer last year, her husband had a plan: get the hide made into a pair of gloves.
It would be a Christmas gift, and a memento by which to remember her first hunt. Mike Kallok took the hide from her deer, and another he shot, to Uber Tanning Co., and was told a couple pair of gloves and mittens would be ready by this summer.
The wait continues.
Kallok drove by Uber Tanning’s Ham Lake location last week and saw what other hunters apparently have seen, too – an eviction notice on the door.
Emails and phone calls to the business have gone unanswered. A message says the voicemail box is full.
“I’d just like to hear back, and at the very least I’d be happy to get the hides back,” Mike Kallok said.
Kallok put down $120 for the work. Other hunters in online forums – who also wonder what’s become of the business – apparently are out even more.
As others have done, Kallok filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. There have been several complaints lodged in recent days, most with the following notation from the BBB: “Company failed to respond to BBB to resolve or address the complaint issues.”
Mark Johnson, executive director of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association, said Uber Tanning purchased deer hides for a two-year period as part of the group’s Hides for Habitat program.
MDHA recently removed the Uber Tanning link from its website, and Johnson said his recent attempts to contact the business have been unsuccessful.
According to the company’s website, it’s been in business in Minnesota since 1904, “making beautiful garments, accessories and durable work gloves that will serve you for many years to come.”
