Dates Announced for Alabama Forestry Camp 2012

The 2012 Alabama Forestry Camp, in its fifteenth year, is coming up soon. Held at the Federation of Southern Cooperatives/Land Assistance Fund’s Rural Training Center in Sumter County near Epes, Alabama, the camp will run from Sunday, June 3, through Thursday, June 7.

Designed for high school students interested in forestry, conservation, and/or natural resources, this five-day camp introduces basic forestry concepts through classroom instruction and outdoor activities. In addition to the educational aspects, plenty of fun recreational activities are also provided. Alabama Forestry Camp’s purpose is a positive learning experience for all participants.

At this year’s camp, students will participate in sessions covering tree identification, forest management, forest products, wildlife, water quality, urban forestry, and forest history. There are also off-campus visits to recreational parks, a private landowner’s property, and forest industry facilities. During “College and Career Night,” students will have the opportunity to talk to college recruiters about careers in forestry and natural resources. The final day of camp includes a graduation ceremony and luncheon for students, their family members, instructors, and counselors. All students will receive a certificate for completion of the camp.

Alabama Forestry Camp is open to both boys and girls between 15 and 18 years of age who have completed the 9th grade, but not yet graduated from high school. Camp participants are housed in dormitories with 24-hour adult supervision. Each attendee is responsible for providing his or her own transportation to and from camp. Applicants selected to attend the camp will be required to pay a $25.00 application fee. All other transportation, meals, and snacks will be provided. Applications should be completed and signed by both student and parent (or legal guardian), and must be postmarked by April 18, 2012. Space is limited.

If you know someone who might be interested in attending Alabama Forestry Camp, have them call any county office of the Alabama Forestry Commission for an application or for more information. Applications are also available on the Alabama Forestry Commission website at
