Officials ponder ban on hunting southwest Va. elk

Richmond, Va. (AP) – Game officials are considering a ban on
hunting elk that have crossed into southwest Virginia from eastern
Kentucky.

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries’ board
plans to vote on the proposal at its Oct. 22 meeting in Richmond
following a public hearing.

Department spokeswoman Julia Dixon says Virginia hunters kill
only two to three elk a year, all in the far southwest.

Dixon says there has been no formal proposal to introduce more
elk in the region, as Kentucky has.

But she says elk can be an economic boost to an area, attracting
hunters and tourists.

Dixon says elk have begun to reproduce in Virginia, and the
department wants to develop a plan for managing them. She says a
hunting ban would be the first step.
