Thousands of catfish to be released in Rock River

Dixon, Ill. (AP) – The fish in the Rock River are about to have
some company.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is set to release
of about 4,000 hatchery-raised channel cat fish in the river from
the boat ramp at Page Park in Dixon on Tuesday.

The release is part of an effort to replenish the river after a
major fish kill there in June. An estimated 72,000 fish died the
same weekend that a train carrying ethanol derailed. Authorities
are still trying to determine if ethanol spilled into a nearby
creek, killing the fish downstream.

Officials have already responded to the fish kill by stocking
the river with more than 50,000 smallmouth bass and 4,000 northern
pike.

Channel catfish are native to the Rock River.
