Lincoln, Neb. (AP) – The state has set an Aug. 7 deadline to
apply for the lone bighorn sheep hunting permit in Nebraska.
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission officials says only residents
who will be at least 12 years old by Dec. 1 can apply.
The permit lasts for the season, Dec. 1-22.
The permit drawing will take place at the Aug. 28 commission
meeting.
Thought to be extinct in Nebraska by the early 1900s, the
bighorns were reintroduced to the state in 1981. The state
estimates its current population at about 300 sheep.
The first hunting season was 1998.
