DNR announces new hunter survey

Madison – Department of Natural Resources Secretary Matt Frank
today announced a new online survey to collect input regarding deer
management issues and thanked the Deer Management Unit Review
Stakeholders Panel for their work in developing and cooperatively
designing the survey with the DNR. The survey will be available
from March 10 to April 1 and will be hosted on the Wisconsin Deer
Management Unit stakeholder Web
site
.

“This new survey is an important DNR effort, working with all
hunters to get information and feedback on the deer hunt,” Frank
said. “Hunter input is a critical component of setting the season
structure for deer. By working closely with the conservation
community we were able to develop a survey that is useful for DNR
biologists and gives all hunters the opportunity to provide direct
feedback on the season. We want to hear from everyone.”

When the new online survey closes on April 1 the results will be
summarized and evaluated to inform the decision making process for
2009 deer seasons.

“This new online survey is an additional tool, but not a
substitute, to our longstanding efforts such as deer management
unit meetings and our annual mail survey of randomly selected deer
hunters,” Frank said. “We are trying out this new technology based
tool to seek broader input from hunters. Depending on hunter
responses we will continue to use it as an additional method for
hunters to inform deer management in the future.

“I strongly encourage everyone interested to attend the upcoming
Deer Herd Status meetings in the coming weeks,” Frank said. “This
new online survey will broaden input to include those who cannot
attend a local deer management unit meeting, but it’s not intended
to be a substitute for attendance at these important meetings.”
