Elk tag auction full of intrigue

Harrisburg – The ongoing rancor over the auctioning of
Pennsylvania’s first-ever Governor’s Tag almost took a very unusual
twist recently.

The tag is good for a bull elk license that can be used in any
zone during this year’s Nov. 2-7 hunt. The Rocky Mountain Elk
Foundation pushed for the legislation to create the tag, along with
Safari Club International, the Foundation for North American Wild
Sheep, and, later, the National Wild Turkey Federation.

Elk Foundation officials fully expected to be the group chosen
to auction the tag, too, given that elk are their main concern.

That didn’t happen. Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive
Director Carl Roe, in a move the Elk Foundation labeled “totally
inappropriate,” gave the tag to the Turkey Federation instead.
