Southern Lower

Lake St. Clair

Perch fishing is heating up on Lake St. Clair. A good bite has
been reported off Selfridge, in front of Gino’s Surf, and between
10 and 11 Mile roads. Perch and bluegills are hitting on Kent Lake,
and walleyes are hitting on Belleville and Ford lakes.

Lake Orion

Shore ice on Prince and Graham lakes has refrozen and anglers
are catching panfish there. The ice took a beating with the recent
warm spell, but most lakes have iced back over. A few crappies are
hitting on Squaw Lake. There was very little snow on the ground as
of last week. Hunting pressure has been light.

Monroe Area

There was no safe ice on Lake Erie as of late last week.

Saginaw Bay Area

Ice is holding up fairly well on Lake Huron’s Saginaw Bay.
Walleye fishing remains very good, with anglers reporting good
success when jigging minnows in 8 to 14 feet of water. Rabbit and
predator hunting has been good, but hunting pressure has been
light.

Brighton Area

Shore ice disappeared from many inland lakes, but frigid
temperatures late last week refroze the ice. Bluegills and crappies
are hitting on Lake Chemung, and a few walleyes are being caught on
Whitmore Lake. Pike fishing also has been good.

Kalamazoo Area

Many lakes in the Kalamazoo area took a beating when the
temperatures raced into the 40s and 50s, and ice-fishing pressure
has faded. A few fresh steelhead have moved into the Kalamazoo
River. Flies and wax worms have been catching the greatest numbers
of fish.

Plainwell Area

Fishing has been fair around Plainwell, and ice conditions are
spotty. Perch fishing has been good on Gun, Pleasant, and Payne
lakes. Pike spearing also has been pretty good. There is 7 to 10
inches of ice on most lakes and just a covering of snow on the
ground.

Muskegon Area

Fishing slowed as ice deteriorated on Muskegon Lake. Boat
anglers are catching a few walleyes, but the bite has generally
been pretty slow. A few bluegills are being caught through the ice
in Snug Harbor. Steelhead fishing is picking up on the Muskegon
River. There was about 4 inches of snow on the ground as of late
last week. Hunting pressure has been light in the area.

Caseville Area

Spotty ice conditions have been reported on the east side of
Lake Huron’s Saginaw Bay, and anglers are urged to use extreme
caution. Those venturing out are catching fair numbers of
walleyes.
