Central Region

Deer Creek Lake (Pickaway, Fayette, Madison counties) – With the
gates open at the spillway at Deer Creek, anglers have been taking
advantage and catching good numbers of fish, reports Jack McKirgan
at Mary’s Bait Shop in Washington Court House. Some saugeyes have
been in the 4- to 5-pound range, McKirgan said, for anglers using
jig and minnow combinations. Popular colors have been pink or white
in 1/4- to 1/2-ounce. Some are also using suspending crankbaits,
either Rapalas or Smithwick Rogues, McKirgan reports. A few catfish
have also been reported, although McKirgan said he can’t confirm
the catfish bite.

Buckeye Lake (Licking, Fairfield, Perry counties) – With warmer
temperatures blanketing the region, the ice came off of Buckeye
about as quickly as it formed, reports Bob Mathie at Bob’s Outdoor
Supply in Newark. Prior to the warm up, ice anglers did fairly well
catching saugeyes on 1/4-ounce jigging spoons tipped with minnow
heads, or on blade baits. A solid stretch of warm weather should
turn on the channel cat bite, said Mathie, who suggests trying cut
shad. Crappies can be caught in shallow water anywhere around
shoreline cover. For saugeyes, try a floating jig tipped with a
small winnow on light line. Mathie said a few more yellow perch
than normal have been showing up in the creel. He suggests using a
No. 4 hook baited with a night crawler and be ready for a light

Indian Lake (Logan County) – It didn’t take long for the good
ice cover that had blanketed this west central Ohio lake to turn
into open water again. As of Feb. 17, reports indicated that as
much as 90 percent of the lake was open. A few boats have been
spotted on the lake, but few reports of fish being caught. Anglers
are again returning back to the favorite Moundwood haunt with a
sporadic bite on saugeyes being reported.
