Mauch Chunk Lake (Carbon County) – A lot of average-sized bass
and nice-sized pickerel were being iced at least through March 1,
as conditions allowed. Shorelines alternated softened and froze,
with changing weather and a warm-up was predicted. Very few panfish
were reported in recent weeks, but pickerel were running 18 to 24
Beltzville Lake (Carbon County) – Water was open in early March,
but few anglers were venturing out in boats and those who did
caught little. Most were jigging deep water with spoons for bass. A
few nice perch were reported. In late February, ice anglers were
catching pickerel up to 23 inches on live bait off the Preachers
Camp Boat Access area. Nice catches of panfish on mealworms and
waxworms also were reported. A few walleyes and striped bass were
coming off the Preachers Camp Boat Access area. Trout action is
still productive on the Pohopoco Creek downstream of Beltzville
Lake and in the Parryville area.
Lackawanna Lake (Lackawanna County) – Ice anglers were catching
bluegills, perch and largemouth bass. A number of large pickerel
were reported. Wally Evarf, of Saylors-burg, iced a 231/2-inch
pickerel with 12-inch girth. Thomas Zingo Jr., of Wilkes-Barre,
landed a 22-inch pickerel near the main boat launch. Both fish were
caught with live bait.
Susquehanna River (Luzerne County) – High water made for light
boating activity, with the West Nanticoke, Duryea and Breslau areas
getting walleye pressure on minnows and twisters.
Lake Irena, Lake Took-a-While (Luzerne County) – Brook trout and
rainbow trout have been hitting waxworms, mealworms, minnows and
Lake Wallenpaupack (Pike County) – A lot of perch, pickerel,
bass, trout and stripers were hitting through the ice through March
Shohola Lake (Pike County) – Ice anglers were catching mostly
smallmouth bass and pickerel, but the bites have been hit or miss
through most of the winter.
Delaware River (Pike County) – A few walleye anglers have been
fishing ice-free water in recent weeks. Fatheads have been
productive around Zane Grey.
Promised Land Lake (Pike County) – Nick Evans, of Abington, iced
a nice pickerel and a rock bass Feb. 17.
Quaker Lake (Susquehanna County) – Recent stockings of rainbow
trout have been caught in 15 to 20 feet on various lures including
teardrops and jigging spoons. Hot spots have included the Brady’s
Beach area and the southeastern corner of the lake.
Lower Woods Pond (Wayne County) – Pickerel and smallmouth bass
were hitting large minnows on tip ups during ice angling in recent
weeks. Panfish have been active in 6 to 8 feet on waxworm-tipped
