Madison, Wis. Wisconsin’s regular nine-day gun deer season opens statewide Saturday, Nov. 22, and state officials say if the weather cooperates, hunters should have plenty of opportunities to fill tags and reduce the state’s deer herd, estimated at 1.4 m

Last year, hunters registered 277,755 deer during the nine-day season. Many deer management units in Wisconsin continue to be above population goals. In addition, wildlife officials are continuing efforts to drastically reduce the deer herd in a large section of southern Wisconsin surrounding the area where deer infected with chronic wasting disease have been found.

Frazee, Minn. Becker County authorities were waiting for a medical examiner’s report to determine what caused the death of a Detroit Lakes man who fell from his deer stand. Sheriff Tim Gordon said the death of Timothy Hofer, 45, was not gun-related.

The sheriff said Gordon was found by his hunting partner Saturday morning hanging from the treestand. Hofer was hunting in a wooded area 41/2 miles northeast of Frazee. He was pronounced dead at St. Mary’s Hospital in Detroit Lakes.
