Walker, Minn. The Kabekona Narrows water access on the west side of Leech Lake, about four miles north of Walker, will be temporarily closed for rehabilitation and expansion, according to the Minnesota DNR.

Work will begin shortly after Labor Day and should be complete by the end of October, said Tony Walzer, DNR acquisition and development specialist in Bemidji. Improvements will include more than doubling the number of parking spaces, realignment of the approach road, new concrete plank ramps, and relocation of the portable toilets. Alternatives to use

Walker, Minn. Butch Furtman, a 59-year-old Duluth multi-species angler and longtime host of television outdoors shows and Frank Schneider, an 84-year-old angling activist from St. Paul, will be enshrined in the Minnesota Fishing Hall of Fame at Walker on

Furtman has produced the popular “Sportsman’s Notebook” TV show on WDIO-TV, Duluth’s ABC affiliate, as well as the syndicated show, “Sportsman’s Journal.” He financed his education by guiding fishermen in the 1960s and worked at Jim’s Bait Service in Duluth for 20 years.
