Brownsville, Minn. A 400-pound black bear was shot and killed after colliding with a car in far southeastern Minnesota.

The car’s driver, from La Crosse, Wis., and her passenger were
not injured in the Friday night accident on Highway 26 in Houston
County near the Wisconsin border.

“All the years I’ve worked, this is the first bear incident
we’ve had,” said Sheriff’s Sgt. Randy Shefelbine. “I know we’ve had
a couple of sightings they’re very rare but to have one hit by a
car, I don’t know if it will ever happen again.”

The male bear, which measured about 6 feet, was crossing the
road when he was hit. He was put down at the scene with a police
shotgun. “There was nothing we could have done to save the bear,”
Shefelbine said.

The bear’s body was turned over to the Gopher State Sportsmen’s
Club in La Crescent. “I’m sure they’ll mount it or something of
that nature,” Shefelbine said.
