Lunker Lure helping more than just anglers

Posted on May 8, 2012

Shane MalawyAnglers outside of southern Illinois may not realize that some of the lures in their tackle boxes are being produced in Perry County by an organization with a history of helping mentally and physically challenged adults.

Lunker Lure, which began production in late 1960 in Carterville, has been contracting with 5-Star Industries in Du Quoin for more than 6 years.

Today, dozens of 5-Star clients manufacture and assemble the Lunker Lures in an assembly line environment.

“It’s prestigious for the employees to get to work in the lure department,” 5-Star Industrial Operations Manager Greg Herrin said.

With the Du Quoin plant being the only Lunker Lure production facility in the country, the employees are busy producing approximately 640,000 lures annually. Herrin reports that about 70,000 spinner baits, 70,000 buzz baits and about 500,000 jigs will be marketed this year.
