Next hunting opportunity in the state is for black bear. Hunters can lay bait for bears starting July 29 and start hunting Aug. 28.

Hunters killed 18,860 wild turkeys this spring, a 9 percent increase from last year.

Annual turkey and grouse brood survey to estimate population growth.

Hunters reported nearly 11,800 turkeys during 2017 spring season.

Hunters checked 19,095 birds during the 2017 wild turkey south zone and northeast zone hunting seasons compared to 16,229 birds in 2016. Youth hunters checked 1,920 birds during the 2017 youth season compared to 1,564

If spring and early summer weather is moderate, production of young should be good this year.

Outings draw 32 hunters who bagged nine gobblers.
