Anglers are releasing plenty of fish in the protected slot of 19.5 – 28 inches, and catching a good number of trophy walleyes over 28 inches.

What’s working and where they’re biting on the Rainy River.

Some reports of spinners starting to work well tipped with a minnow or crawler.

This is the time for jigging. Most anglers are anchoring up and vertically jigging with a jig and minnow. The best jig colors… gold, orange, chartreuse, pink or a combo of these colors.

For the opener, most anglers will be going after the walleyes anchored up and vertically jigging with a jig and minnow along the south shore of Lake of the Woods.

Various reports of pike in the bays. Most bays are now open or almost open for open water pike anglers.
