The effort against the lake trout is the centerpiece of a long-term fight to help Yellowstone’s native cutthroat trout. Lake trout feed on cutthroats, causing the native fish population to decline.
Creek in far southwestern Colorado will have the largest continuous stretch of native Colorado River cutthroat trout in the state.
The tribe is also offering rewards to anglers who turn in pike caught in the southern third of the lake. Coeur d’Alene Tribe spokeswoman Heather Keen says anglers can get $5 per fish, and some fish marked with special tags carry rewards of between $50 and $500.
