Officials in Whiteside County have been fielding reports of cougar sightings since late September. The Whiteside County cougar was captured on a trail camera on private property. It is believed the cougar killed in DeKalb County is the same animal.
The photo recently gained news media attention after it was posted on social media.
The attack occurred less than 10 miles from the February 2019 mountain lion attack of a Fort Collins man who killed the young lion in self-defense at Horsetooth Mountain Open Space.
Officials say the cougar recently killed three alpacas, a miniature horse and a deer.
The image of the cat was caught on a landowner’s trail cam July 7 in daylight hours northwest of Ironwood, in the far western portion of the Upper Peninsula.
The National Park Service called it a rare feat.
