This year marks the 40th anniversary of the program in the state, created in 1977 to increase public hunting opportunities in southern Michigan, where 97 percent of the land base is privately owned.

Taken in Montcalm County during youth hunt, it would be be the 10th free-ranging deer in the state found to have chronic wasting disease.

Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan have seen gains in wild bird populations for 2017, while Minnesota showed a decrease in population.
