Over 15,000 deer were killed last year under a pair of programs criticized by some hunters as open to widespread abuse but labeled by DEC wildlife biologists as necessary to control whitetail numbers.

As ice-out progresses north, those with a vested interest in fishing might see this weekend something they didn’t in many places during last weekend’s fishing opener: fishermen in boats, on open water.

Twenty-five minutes into the 2013 season, Gov. Mark Dayton, fishing during the Governor’s Fishing Opener, got the walleye monkey off his back.

In the end, the vote was rather anticlimactic.

There are days when trout don’t bite, deer don’t move, morels don’t grow, and turkeys don’t respond; sometimes those days last an entire season.
