New York’s ECO, Forest Ranger academies start up

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Amanda Lefton recently announced that the agency is holding academies for its newest classes of Environmental Conservation Police Officers (ECOs) and Forest Rangers.
The six-month training academies will prepare 30 ECOs (with nine alternatives), and 20 Ranger recruits for careers in the Divisions of Law Enforcement and Forest Protection.

$200,000 now available for deer habitat grant program in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

The application period for the Upper Peninsula’s Deer Habitat Improvement Partnership Initiative competitive grant program is now open.
The DNR initiative is a cooperative grant program designed to enhance deer habitat on private lands in the U.P. New for 2026, the total DHIPI program budget has increased to $200,000.

Updated: Michigan’s 2026 Black Lake sturgeon season ends in 48 minutes

This year’s sturgeon season on Michigan’s Black Lake (in Cheboygan and Presque Isle counties) ended at 8:48 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7.
The season, which included spearing and hook-and-line fishing, was scheduled to run Feb. 7-11, or until the harvest limit of six lake sturgeon had been reached. Just 48 minutes turned out to be enough time.
