Ohio Insider: Lake Erie walleye fishing is great, but potential ‘fly in the ointment’ exists

I had the unique opportunity to fish with Gov. Mike DeWine and a couple of his grandkids during the 45th annual Governor’s Fish Ohio Day last month.
It was my first time fishing alongside the governor himself after about 10 years of attending Governor’s Fish Ohio Day on Lake Erie. The annual event is aimed to highlight the Lake Erie fishery and drive home its importance to the region’s tourism and economy.

Smallmouth potential really shines at Ohio’s Lake Milton in Mahoning County

When it comes to Lake Milton in northeast Ohio, anglers often think about walleyes since its one of the handful of inland lakes that is stocked with this species.
But, what most anglers overlook is that the 1,684-acre Milton is perhaps a sleeper for good smallmouth bass and muskie lakes in the state.

Ohio Insider: Fallout from cuts to H2Ohio Initiative

I was truly surprised when the legislature in the recent state budget proceedings reckoned deep cuts in the H2Ohio Initiative.
Gov. Mike DeWine launched the water quality initiative in 2019 in an effort to improve public drinking water, restore wetlands, and to reduce agricultural runoff into the state’s waterways. To date, the program has benefitted more than 16,000 acres and enrolled more than 3,200 farmers in best management practices.

Lake Erie celebrated at 45th Governor’s Fish Ohio Day

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel joined a host of other walleye fishermen on Lake Erie Wednesday, July 16, to celebrate the 45th Governor’s Fish Ohio Day.
The annual event highlights the importance of Lake Erie to the state’s tourism economy and to the Buckeye State’s legion of fishermen.

Ohio’s outdoors trailblazers: Doug Clifford fishes for peace of mind

For as long as he can remember, Doug Clifford has been in the business of educating kids – on and off the water.
But, it was an encounter with a childhood neighbor that really sent Clifford to school on his fishing lessons.
“I was in junior high and all the guys would talk about their fishing adventures,” he remembered.

Longstanding Winous Point Shooting Club an important part of duck study in Ohio

The Winous Point Shooting Club (WPSC) on Lake Erie’s Sandusky Bay traces its history to 1856, making WPSC the oldest, continuously operating duck club in North America.
A group of writers and photographers from the Outdoor Writers of Ohio (OWO) were recently offered a tour of what is Ohio’s largest privately-owned marsh.

Ohio Insider: Some final thoughts from the state’s spring 2025 turkey season

We’re a bit more than a month removed from the 2025 spring turkey season closing in Ohio. To get some perspective on the success of the season, I contacted Mark Wiley, who’s in charge of the ODNR Division of Wildlife’s turkey program.
Wiley said overall it was a good season.
