Time to apply in the bear hunt lottery in Minnesota

Prospective bear hunters have until Friday, May 2, to apply for a bear hunting license from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Applications for the 2025 season can be submitted online, at any license agent or by telephone at 888-665-4236.
A total of 4,605 licenses are available across the 15 quota areas where licenses are limited for the 2025 season, which opens Monday, Sept. 1, and closes Sunday, Oct. 12.

Construction ongoing on Minnesota’s Canisteo Mine Pit outlet

After pumping more than 4.7 billion gallons of water from the Canisteo Mine Pit in Itasca County to manage the pit’s water levels, the Minnesota DNR, in partnership with the Department of Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation, is building a permanent water outlet structure.
Once it’s up and running, the outlet will allow water to flow from the Canisteo via gravity to the Prairie River, maintaining Canisteo’s water levels year-round without relying on seasonal pumping.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is offering a six-month workshop to teach skills needed to hunt, field dress and cook white-tailed deer to individuals who have little to no archery hunting experience.
This workshop consists of summer long archery practices, fall workshops and hunting opportunities throughout Iowa’s archery season. All sessions are led by instructors that possess the experience to teach skills necessary to become efficient archers and bowhunters.

Iowa DNR’s annual spring wildlife spotlight survey underway

Staff with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) are currently conducting their annual nighttime spring spotlight surveys across the state, collecting information on Iowa’s deer and furbearer populations.
The annual survey is conducted from mid-March through April in each county, beginning an hour after sunset, preferably on nights with low wind, high humidity and above freezing temperatures. The routes cover different habitats from river bottoms, to farm fields, prairies, woodlots, pastures and timber stands.

DNR sets 2025 open water walleye limit on Minnesota’s Upper Red Lake

Anglers fishing on Minnesota’s Upper Red Lake during the 2025 open-water season that starts on May 10 will have a five-walleye possession limit, with only one walleye over 17 inches allowed.
“Upper Red Lake female spawning walleye have been managed at a level that has resulted in a number of strong year classes recently,” said Edie Evarts, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources area fisheries supervisor for Bemidji. “The summer regulation is an opportunity for anglers to keep abundant young walleye while also maintaining the breeding fish at a level that continues to produce successful year classes.”

Ron Olson, the longtime chief of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Parks and Recreation Division, recently was recognized by Michigan United Conservation Clubs for his decades of service to conservation in a career that has had impact statewide and nationally. Iowa’s pheasant season has evolved over decades

Iowa’s current 70-plus day long pheasant season, opening on the last Saturday in October through Jan. 10 each year, is a long way from how it began. In the early years, from 1926-41, the season varied in length from 2-7 days, and pre-1933, it was only opened in counties where 150 landowners signed a petition to hold a season.
Shooting hours bounced around, too, from opening at noon until WW2 to avoid conflicts with morning farm work, to opening at 9 a.m., and then back to noon, then sunrise to sunset (for one year) before settling on 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., in 1966.
