A check with northern Wisconsin bait shops suggest anglers had a good start to the 2025 fishing season, even if it was bit chilly the morning of Saturday, May 3.
It was 33 degrees in Oneida and Vilas counties that morning when I met my learn-to-hunt turkey mentees. Those temps didn’t improve until after 11 a.m. when clouds broke and the sun punched through.
If you’ve already read this story from Outdoor News, then you know that the 2025 turkey season is off to a roaring start in Wisconsin. There’s no way of knowing how things will play out from seasons two through six, but as of the evening of April 22, we were on a pace to register more than 50,000 turkeys.

It looks like turkey hunters are off to a good start on the 2025 spring season, judging by early harvest numbers for the first season.
According to Taylor Finger, the DNR’s turkey and waterfowl ecologist, the preliminary harvest through the youth hunt, learn-to-hunt (LTH) programs, and the first time period stood at 14,737 birds as of April 15.
Wanna know the second best thing about St. Patrick’s Day? I say second best thing because I’m counting Guinness, corned beef and cabbage, revelry and anything else that occurs on St. Patrick’s Day as the first best thing, as long as I don’t get arrested.
So, the second best thing about St. Patrick’s Day coming around one more time – (and I’m saying this in a whisper so only my friends can hear) – grocery stores always put their piles of cabbage on sale the day after the celebration ends.

Thanks so much to Bob Haase, of Eldorado, for all he has given to conservation and Wisconsin’s outdoor community over so many years. Haase has been named the 2025 Wisconsin Outdoor News Conservationist of the Year. His nominations came from several directions.
I probably say this every year – this is always a tough call. We receive nominations for this award every year for folks who have done so much for our natural resources and the people who enjoy the outdoors.
I ran out of room to stuff all of my Henry Repeating Arms information into this news story, so I’m going to use up the rest of it here.
