Star Watch: Interested in joining an astronomy club? There’s many across the country

Are you awed and bewildered by what you are seeing in the dark sky on your way to a turkey or deer stand, or a favorite fishing spot? Aside from reading my bi-monthly “Outdoors After Dark” column in Outdoor News, here’s another suggestion that may help you sort things out. Join an astronomy club.

Star Watch: Here’s how to find the Winter Triangle this December

In a previous article, we talked about the “Summer Triangle,” an asterism formed by the stars Vega, Deneb and Altair. Now, nearly six months later, a similar feature comes into view in a different part of our night sky.
The “Winter Triangle” is also comprised of three bright stars: Sirius, Procyon and Betelgeuse. This asterism is relatively easy to find using the constellation Orion as a guide.

Star Watch: The incredible Andromeda Galaxy

Astronomers tell us that there are billions of galaxies in the Universe besides our own Milky Way. The Andromeda Galaxy is special though, because it’s the only other galaxy that we can see from Earth with the naked eye. Scientists tell us that it may contain up to a trillion stars, more than the 200 billion or so found in our Milky Way.

This event happens when our moon is between the Earth and sun but farther from us in its elliptical orbit. At this point, it only blocks the center of the sun resulting in an outer “ring of fire.”

Star Watch: What do we know about Saturn and its rings?

Nothing leaves an impression like looking through the eyepiece of a telescope and seeing Saturn and its rings for the first time. Saturn has the distinction of being the farthest planet from the Sun that can be seen with the naked eye, but we need at least a small telescope to see its rings.

Star watch: Planning ahead for solar eclipses

“Eclipse chasers” will be on the move twice during the next nine months in response to an annular solar eclipse on Oct. 14, 2023 followed by a total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. On both dates all 48 contiguous states in the U.S. will experience at least a partial solar eclipse, weather permitting.
