Northwest Minnesota initiative in Red River basin turns eroding waterways into lasting habitat

The first, 4-mile-long segment of the Middle-Snake-Tamarac Rivers Watershed District’s 9-mile-long Swift Coulee restoration project was constructed and seeded in 2025. A partnership between the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources (BWSR) and the Red River Watershed Management Board (RRWMB) is tapping the Reinvest in Minnesota (RIM) conservation easement program to restore priority riparian habitat corridors across northwestern Minnesota. The aim: improve water quality, reduce flood damage, and create valuable habitat for fish and wildlife.
