Nature Smart: The fascinating fireflies of summer

Fireflies are beetles whose bioluminescent flashes attract mates. Each species blinks a distinct pattern, and larvae are hungry predators of snails and worms. Their glow is a cold light, produced without heat during summer nights. (Photo by Stan Tekiela)

The long evenings of summer bring out many interesting insects that we don’t find any other time of year. I was thinking about this last night, just before sunset while I was in my backyard and watching hundreds of fireflies or lightning bugs blinking in the warm summer evening.
