The Michaux State Forest in Pennsylvania is a different kind of place. Named for French botanists Andre and Francois Michaux, who cataloged American flora in the 1790s, it’s an island of highland forest.
Lapping at the island shore is a sea of intensely cropped farmland, swelling town centers, and advancing commercial sprawl. Less than three hours away are the metro swaths of Baltimore, Washington, and Philadelphia. The Michaux is a sylvan haven in high demand.
