August is prime time for king salmon in Lake Michigan

August is prime time for salmon for several reasons. Salmon activity levels peak late in the summer, as does the water temperature in Lake Michigan, which creates a distinct thermocline that helps concentrate the fish. (Photos by gnatoutdoors.com)

It cracks me up when I see a Midwest regional magazine with no story about fishing for salmon in their August issue. 
How can you not think of salmon in August? Most refer to August as the summer doldrums for many species. Waters are warm, fish are moving deeper and scattering, and fishing for most species gets tougher during late summer… but not for salmon. August is prime time for summer Chinooks.
