First lake sturgeon feeding excavations documented by Michigan research team
Excavations in sediments have long been identified as being made by green sturgeon and white sturgeon in Washington state’s Pacific Ocean estuaries and Atlantic sturgeon in the intertidal mudflats of the Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick tidal zones.
These excavation “pits” made with the sturgeon’s protractible mouths as they vacuum sediments in search of invertebrate prey items pinpoint locations of interest for these endangered fish species. However, similar feeding excavations had never been formally documented from lake sturgeon in the Great Lakes or elsewhere within their North American range.
