Subtle differences can make all the difference when it comes to muskie lures

Water churned behind Nick’s topwater as it steadily plopped toward the boat. Suddenly, about 20 feet out, the big muskie that was trailing the bait spun off in a giant swirl and retreated back to its lair. In the bright sun, we watched its progress until it faded from view near an island.
“She’s hot, but not yet ready to eat,” I said to Nick and Charlie, my guests for the day. “Let’s leave her alone for an hour and try again.”

Glenn Sapir: Largemouths or smallmouths? Don’t make me choose

Largemouths or smallmouths – which would I rather go after? That’s like asking whether I’d like a vanilla or chocolate hot fudge sundae? They are both great, and I can’t go wrong with either. Which flavor do I really prefer? I guess that depends on my mood and circumstances.
Living in southeastern New York, only 50 miles from midtown Manhattan, I find that largemouths are much more common than smallmouths.

Steve Sarley: By the end of our fishing day, Seelhoff was true teammate

In my last column, I was telling the tale about my initial entry into the world of tournament fishing. It was a PWT event on the Illinois River out of Spring Valley.
Do you know how embarrassing it is to head to the weigh-in with nary a fish in the livewell? I do. As a matter of fact, out of 165 boats, a mere seven could say they knew that feeling. Yes, 159 had caught fish and seven pairs of inept anglers scored a big fat goose egg for the day.

ICAST 2026 unfurls top new angling tackle and gear

America’s largest sportfishing trade show, the International Convention of Allied Sportfishing Trades (ICAST) ran July 14-17 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando.
If there was a clear takeaway from this year’s show, it was that the fishing industry continues to invest heavily in technology while refining rather than reinventing traditional gear. On the tackle side, there’s a growing number of finesse-oriented presentations and big swimbaits that will reach retailers later this year and into the 2027.

Gretchen Steele: Southern Illinois’ Kaskaskia River Delta Waterfowl Chapter to celebrate 20 years of showing up

Some anniversaries arrive with fireworks and fanfare. Others arrive wearing mud on their boots.
This summer, the Kaskaskia River Delta Waterfowl Chapter in southern Illinois reaches its 20th year, and I find myself thinking less about banquets and more about mornings, less about the dollars raised and more about the people who raised them.

America has a long history and love affair with fishing

The story of sport fishing is woven through the country’s history, evolving from a means of survival into a cherished outdoor tradition and cornerstone of fish and wildlife conservation.
The first European settlers found rivers so crowded with Atlantic salmon, shad, striped bass, and sturgeon that they seemed inexhaustible. Indigenous peoples had harvested these waters for thousands of years, using fish weirs, nets, bone hooks, and spears while developing an intimate understanding of seasonal fish movements.

Minnesota high school trapshooter claims national clay crown after a vow to return

In a Facebook post on July 24, 2025 after placing eighth in the USA High School Clay Target League National Championship in Mason, Mich., Nevyn Hengel of Sibley East High School in Arlington made an “I’ll be back” declaration.
“First national podium appearance, not the last one either,” wrote a confident Hengel, who was pictured standing on the podium holding a trophy for his laudable eighth-place finish in the trapshooting competition. Hengel, 18, of Gaylord, wasn’t kidding, and his words on social media that day in 2025 proved more prophetic than he ever imagined.
