Wisconsin sport shop in Spooner loses beloved yellow Lab ‘Babs’ to likely accidental poisoning
Rick and Barb Anderson’s yellow Lab, Babs, has been part of the welcoming committee at Spooner’s AAA Sport Shop for years. Sadly, Babs died Feb. 13 after apparently being exposed to a rodenticide poison after an ice fishing trip on a Washburn County lake.
Nuisance permits for black vultures again available to Illinois farmers
DNR and the Illinois Farm Bureau are again working with federal agencies to get a handle on the growing black vulture population.
When it comes to the state’s “kettle” – a term for vultures soaring in circling formations – progress is still adrift. Bills in the U.S. House and Senate filed last spring – one by a Senator who is now serving at the Secretary of Homeland Security – both aimed to make it easier for farmers and employees to thin the population, but both measures stalled in the fall.

There were three of us, each of us had brought our own fishing rod and a handful of lures we thought might be attractive to the fish. Other than the required safety gear, and what turned out to be a woefully inadequate net, that was about the extent of the tackle on board.
