Ralph Loos: Illinois measure to increase deer rifle capacity fixes handgun ‘snag’

Sometimes hunters see a snag in what otherwise seems like a good idea and are not shy about saying, “Whoa, whoa, whoa.”
That’s the family-friendly version of what a hunter is not shy about saying. This seems to be the case with the proposal to increase the capacity of centerfire rifles from one to three rounds for the Illinois firearms deer season.

New York fishing expo helps in fight against pediatric, adolescent cancer

The fishing community came together at the Greater Niagara Fishing Expo in Niagara Falls last month to help a most worthy cause, carrying the theme of “Fishing Fights Pediatric Cancer.”
The 11th annual fishing show worked with vendors and seminar speakers to raise funds to support Catching Dreams Charters – a nonprofit organization dedicated to giving children battling pediatric cancer and their families the opportunity to escape the challenges of treatment and enjoy a therapeutic day on the water.

Vermont Fish & Wildlife to advocates for mountain lion reintroduction: ‘slow down’

Vermont, New York’s neighbor to the east, has a message for a group known as Mighty Earth regarding their efforts to bring mountain lions back to the Green Mountain State. “Slow down”
“A campaign is underway to bring mountain lions to Vermont,” said a Feb. 9 commentary penned by the agency’s leaders and posted on the agency website. “As the state agency that would be responsible for these cats if Mighty Earth succeeds, the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department is asking mountain lion advocates to slow down.”

Turkey hunters need a backup plan ready in case the fly-down goes awry

The day’s hunt was just one more unanswered turkey call from ending. Air temperatures were soaring toward their forecasted high in the 80s and mosquitoes were everywhere. In short, conditions were miserable. My mind weighed various lunch options before I headed home.
I stopped near an edge where tall pines met a brushy clear-cut, dug the box call from the vest and paused before casting into the wind what I thought would be the day’s final yelp.

Dean Bortz: Let’s talk about a timber sale

It was probably around late winter of 1972 or 1973 that our grandfather cut a skidding trail through our cedar swamp in southern Ashland County so my brother and I could make some money by cutting balsam pulpwood.
He built a wooden dray that he pulled behind his Farmall H tractor. Loading and unloading was done by hand by my brother and me. That’s when I gained an appreciation for chopper mitts.

Wisconsin State Roundup: Ban of frog, turtle races necessary? And efforts to ban some hunting contests

Apparently Mark Twain had absolutely no idea what kind of concerns and consternations he would create some folks in today’s society when he wrote his story, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, in 1865.
You can read Tim Eisele’s news story from the February Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) meeting at which NRB members approved a request from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to ban all turtle and frog races or contests (actually includes all amphibians and reptiles – not limited to turtles and frogs) in Wisconsin.

Big fish, tiny fish and odd fish – Illinois DNR stocked 22.6 million of them

Illinois DNR stocked 674,200 largemouth bass in lakes and rivers across the state last year, which sounds like a big number.
But it’s small-time compared to the nearly 13 million saugers and more than 5 million walleyes collected by fisheries biologists from DNR’s hatchery system and set free in state waters for anglers to someday catch – if the creeks don’t rise and luck is on their side.
