Has Michigan’s UP moose population significantly declined? Latest survey raises questions

The latest survey shows a significant drop in moose numbers, but the estimate is suspect. “We are not sure if the number of moose has declined that much or if the change is from redistribution of animals on the landscape," said Chad Stewart, the DNR’s deer, elk and moose program supervisor. Based on the DNR’s estimate of the number of moose occupying the 1,400-square-mile core area in the western UP, the herd has declined significantly since the last survey two years ago.
However, the accuracy of the recent estimate, garnered from an aerial survey conducted last winter, is suspect.
