Lackawaxen River’s redbreast sunfish brighten September fishing in Pennsylvania

The Lackawaxen is one of the great rivers of Pennsylvania.
In the spring and later in the fall the Lackawaxen is full of stocked trout but now at the end of summer, before the fall Fish & Boat stocking, it is the home of scattered warmwater species: smallmouth bass, rock bass, some bluegills and my favorite – redbreast sunfish.

Mike Schoonveld: Coping with ‘lure addiction’ requires work

The term posed in the title of this column is specifically about all the fishing lures I own and what I do with them. I’ve probably got a million of them – OK, likely just thousands – but I’m way past several hundred.

Illinois bobcat season again to max out at 2,000 permits

The 10th Illinois bobcat season won’t see the changes previous seasons have, but interest in securing one of the 2,000 hunting and trapping permits distributed by DNR is expected to remain high.
The application period for 2025-26 permits opens Sept. 1 and runs through Sept. 30. According to DNR Furbearer Biologist Stan McTaggart, last year’s season ran smoothly with no hiccups and he sees no problems this year.

Quinney Fishing Club makes a difference on Wisconsin’s Lake Winnebago

While there usually isn’t much going on in Quinney, a small unincorporated community on Lake Winnebago’s east shore, the local fishing club named for the community has more than 200 members and has donated to several groups and agencies that help keep the Winnebago system’s annual sturgeon spearing and ice fishing seasons safe.
“It’s mostly guys who are pretty dedicated fishermen in our area who want to see the lake be used to its full extent.”

Commentary: Make sure your outdoors ‘last call’ doesn’t come with regrets

The outdoors – Mother Nature – offers each of us intriguing experiences away from large social crowds of humans. Our learning experiences and personal privacies will never be matched. The feel of a hard-fighting fish. Wild game harvests. The beauty of the outdoors that our ugly human cities can ruin our privacy.
I am fortunate. I have always been devoted to the outdoors and all that nature offers. Most of the time each of us usually focuses on our personal needs. I have, too.
