Jeffrey Frischkorn: Ultra-popular in Europe, but not so much for carp in the United States

If ever a poster child for invasive species existed, the barbel-face of the common carp would strike a defining pose on any biological wanted poster. For good reason, at least in the United States. Back in the Old Country, not so much. Just the opposite, in fact it appears.
And we’re talking a pretty wide swath of the Northern Hemisphere from the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean clear to the waters of the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. It is a huge swath of the Old World where the carp has long held the title of the best of the rest.

Commentary: Record number of canceled permits again highlights annual Boundary Waters visitor report

Once again, more people canceled permits to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness last year than ever before, according to a new report from the U.S. Forest Service.
Cancellations of BWCAW permits reached an all-time high of 11,244, the Forest Service announced in the report, which includes data from 2024 and the past five years of BWCAW visitation. The Forest Service says cancellations have more than doubled in five years.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Removal of abandoned boats presents many challenges

Pennsylvania finally has a law to enable the Fish & Boat Commission and other law enforcement agencies to remove abandoned and derelict boats (or vessels).
This initiative greatly interests me because my son is managing the Abandoned and Derelict Vessel Workgroup for the Oregon Department of State Lands. We have talked at length about his challenges.
