It’s the summer and families across the country are taking their vacations. 
For me, it was a trip down to Jacksonville, Florida, to a home owned by a friend about a mile up the St. Johns River from the Atlantic Coast. Having been there before, I have watched dolphins ride the bow waves of ships as they come in, and my son caught a sculpin-looking fish off a piece of string cheese we bought at a gas station. However, this time was different.

Catching up with the ‘jerk’ buck, a huge-bodied New York 10-pointer

It was in the fall of 2019 when my friend Laura said “I have this buck that is a real jerk (not her exact word), It needs to go. Can you get rid of it for me?”
At that time Laura was the manager of the bookstore at the college where I work, and she knew from previous conversations that I was a deer hunter. She went on to explain that the “jerk” buck was causing serious damage to her fruit trees, was getting into her garden, and wasn’t intimidated by her dogs.
