Minnesota high school students get fish curriculum that goes beyond angling 101

High school teacher Dan Kreft has brought a course to Hinckley-Finlayson High School that should be the envy of students all across Minnesota: angling.
When Kreft read about a school on Minnesota’s Iron Range that had an angling class, he loved the idea. So, he proposed it as a semester-long class, and it’s now been running for a couple years.

Lake Michigan commercial trawling rules for whitefish finally settled

The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) approved permanent changes to Lake Michigan commercial fishing trawling regulations for lake whitefish.
The proposal had been tabled at the February meeting, but at the April 9 meeting it was approved unanimously. The new rule will replace a rule that expires October 2025, and will allow trawling for lake whitefish from Dec. 1 to Aug. 31 each year.

Fly-fishing for crappies is a fun way to change things up this spring

With the enthusiasm of the Pennsylvania trout season opener coming to an end and the preparation to the upcoming spring gobbler season on the horizon, there is an underrated and overlooked opportunity during this midspring season: catching crappies on flies.
Yes, you read that correctly. Although, I am not the first to pioneer this niche in the fly-fishing world, I do believe it is undersold, especially for those looking for a seasonal change from trout and to the beginner or novice fly-angler.

Here’s how to work the remarkably weedless, deadly effective bladed jig

It was a blustery fall day with temperatures in the 40s and a slicing north wind that pushed water temperatures into the low 50s.
In my mind, it was perfect for a spinnerbait spun over the top of weeds in the shallow, southern Michigan lake. That’s been my go-to bait for early- and late-season bass fishing for the past two decades. But I’m an old guy, and neighbor kid Carter Grewett is a more forward thinker. He opted for a chatterbait, generically known as a bladed jig.

Michigan’s Sturgeon River steelhead make for decades worth of opener memories

We’ve lost track over the years, but this spring is between our 35th and 40th year that our close-knit group of high school buddies will have spent the trout opener on the Sturgeon River near Wolverine, Mich.
With the trout opener just a couple weeks away (April 26), memories and nostalgia have awakened. The cabin we stay at, affectionately referred to as the Shady Rest, has been in the Morley family for generations.
