The once-endangered osprey has ‘increased dramatically’ in Illinois

Wildlife biologist Chuck Rizzo climbs into the bucket of an aerial lift truck in an otherwise ordinary Cook County, Ill., forest preserve and rises to his destination: a sturdy, stick-strewn platform built on top of a 50-foot telephone pole.
The lift operator maneuvers the bucket to the platforms, where Rizzo reaches toward the sticks and lifts out two pudgy osprey chicks with bulging chocolate-brown eyes and bellies covered in fluff.

New state-record largemouth caught from Cayuga Lake certified by New York DEC

New York’s Cayuga Lake has a concrete reputation for great bass fishing.
In the 2024 Bassmaster Magazine 100 Best Bass Lakes, this Finger Lake ranked No. 8 for the Northeast Region of the country. In 2022, Thomas Russell Jr., of Albion, reeled in an 8-pound, 6-ounce smallmouth bass from the lake to take over the top spot in New York as the species leader.
The latest fish to storm the New York bass world is a 12-pound, 6-ounce Cayuga Lake largemouth bass caught by Jim Britenbaugh, of Fairfield, Pa., while practicing for a bass tournament on July 11. The New York Department of Environmental Conservation confirmed Britenbaugh’s catch as the new state record in a release on July 22.
