Fish, wildlife depend on springtime flooding

Above is an example of flooding along the Mississippi River this spring. Floods can be devastating events, but nature relies on them to jump-start many species of fish, wildlife, and even floodplain landscapes. (Photo by Jeremiah Haas)

From a fish standpoint, floods are very positive events and do multiple things. First, the high water opens up terrestrial food resources that were high and dry before. The river’s surface area can easily double during a flood, especially in the areas of the river which still have floodplains.
