Illinois research looks at what triggers a muskie to bite

On June 17, 2022, in an example of why muskies are considered the “fish of 10,000 casts,” Chicago-area teenager Kaiden Schrieber landed a 50-inch muskie. Schrieber had spent nearly a year specifically targeting muskies. This trophy fish was his first catch. (Photo provided)

In a new study, University of Illinois researchers got into the minds of muskies to learn what personality traits make the fish more likely to strike. In the process, they learned valuable lessons that could help conserve the important aquatic predators.
