Backyard and beyond: Holiday bird count, and photographing the whitetail rut

On a Saturday in mid-December, I’ll be heading out with a small group of fellow bird watchers to count birds for my local Audubon Society chapter. Tens of thousands of other volunteers across our hemisphere will be doing the same thing during a three-week window.
