The usual big hitters in the ice fishing marketplace have come through with some great new products and twists to already proven fish-catching jigs and spoons for winter 2021-22.
Here’s what you need to add to your arsenal for the upcoming ice fishing season. Get them while you can, because they’ll likely be flying off store shelves soon.
Snyder’s Lures 360 Death Roll
Legendary tackle developer Gary Snyder just keeps kicking out awesome fish-producing spoons. This year, Snyder’s Lures is introducing the new 360 Death Roll spoon, a radically designed lure featuring a high grade swivel attached by split ring to its body that spins 360 degrees.
The spoon has been designed to spin and imitate a dying minnow. This unique movement has the flash of a small propeller blade, along with a flipper blade next to the round bend treble hook. Neither anglers nor fish have ever seen this design.
The 360 Death Roll comes in 12 color patterns, including Realistic Fish, ultra violet and a series of glow finishes. It’s available in hook sizes No. 8 and 10 and weighs 1⁄16-ounce.
Clam Ribbon Leech Flutter Spoon
Clam Pro Tackle has added the Ribbon Leech Flutter Spoon to its lineup of winter fishing tackle. This spoon is a close relative to the popular Leech Flutter Spoon, which has been a staple in the Clam Pro Tackle line for many years.
The Ribbon Leech Flutter Spoon is a thinner cut spoon that falls remarkably slow. Its action is like a penny getting dropped into a wishing well: You will not be able to control where it flutters, but you will be able to see where it is on your down view electronics.
The new Ribbon Leech Flutter Spoon, does what its name says, features incredible fluttering action. But with its thinner cut, it falls down the water column much slower than the original Leech Spoon.
It’s complete with the addition of a noisy flapper blade and oversized and extra-strong red treble hook that keeps fish pinned. This new spoon is also constructed of environmentally friendly Zinc Alloy, is available in 12 colors including Hologram and Glow/UV selections, and three sizes.
New Rapala Jigging Rap Colors
There might not be a lure that’s proven the test of time more than Rapala’s horizontal Jigging Rap. Heading into this ice fishing season, Rapala has added four new color patterns to this time-tested fish producer. The Jigging Rap is of course a balanced, weighted minnow profile that swims in tantalizing circles on the fall. With single reversed hooks on the nose and posterior, and a center treble hook hung from a belly eyelet, they don’t allow for missed bites.
As for the new colors, they’re available in all five Jigging Rap sizes: Fruit Punch – Black/purple back, pink sides with four thick black stripes, chartreuse head with yellow and black eyes, pink-orange belly. Glow Pink Squirrel – White back, white sides with four black spots, white belly, pink tail and head, yellow and black eyes. Glow Slimey Lime – Chartreuse back, chartreuse sides with four black spots, chartreuse belly, green head with yellow and black eyes. And Head Spin – Chartreuse back, chartreuse sides with eight vertical, black stripes, pink belly, pink head with yellow and black eyes.
Northland Tackle Line-up
There are three major additions from Northland Tackle that anglers will want to get their hands on this ice season.
The new Northland Coffin Spoon attracts fish from a distance and gets them to react with its internal brass rattle and loud Kicker-Tail Fin. This is the loudest spoon Northland Tackle has ever produced.
The Coffin Spoon’s flat-sided profile produces an incredible tumbling action and its angled body reflects light in unique ways. The Buck-Shot Coffin Spoon is available in four sizes and 12 fish-catching colors, including glow, UV and metallic patterns.
The Bro Bug Spoon is a new slender offering that features a tapering profile, which assists its quick fall motion. Its bulging 3D eyes complement the spoon profile and allows it to show up better on electronics.
The new Bro Bug Spoon is available in three sizes and 12 color combos including glow, UV and metallic patterns.
The new Tungsten Mud Bug features an insect-like fat head body with bulging eyes (the body and eyes both glow) and a premium needle point hook with a 60-degree angle. It’ll punch through slush and get to the target zone fast. Available in two sizes: No. 12 hook and No. 10 hook, and comes in eight different fish-catching colors.
VMC Tungsten Additions
The VMC Tungsten Fly Jigs and Tungsten Bullfly Jigs are now available in a new color: Glow Purple. The head, body and goose-feather accents of each jig are entirely purple and enhanced with Ultra Glow technology, which holds a charge for up to 15 minutes.
Featuring a goose-feather tail and wings, the VMC Bullfly Jig is longer and bulkier than similar-style panfish jigs. A perfect imitator of natural flies and aquatic insects, the VMC Tungsten Fly Jig features the same wings as the Bullfly Jig, but not the tail.
Power Gap hooks on each jig feature a wider round gap than other micro-jigs of equal weight, greatly increasing hook-up percentages. Each jig has a 90-degree hook eye to ensure optimal horizontal position.
VMC Bullfly Jigs and Fly Jigs are available in three sizes, and eight additional color patterns, including four metallic finishes and five Ultra Glow patterns.
Also new, the VMC Tungsten Tubby Jigs and Tungsten Mongo Jigs are now available in six new Ultra Glow color patterns – Glow Fire Tiger, Glow Hot Perch, Glow Purpledescent, Glow Parrot, Glow Tiger and Glow Yellow Perch.
The Tungsten Tubby Jig boasts a super-fast drop speed, allowing ice anglers to deliver their favorite natural and soft-plastic baits to the strike zone faster. Tungsten Mongo Jigs offer the same weight as traditional lead jigs, at half the size, enabling them to drop fast through the water column.
Tungsten Tubby Jigs are available in three sizes, while the Tungsten Mongo Jigs are available in two sizes and each jig is available in eight additional color patterns.
Greenback Rod Case from Lakewood Products
The Greenback is a rod carrying case and more. Designed by Lakewood Products, it might just be the ultimate ice fishing storage option.
The Greenback allows protection for your longer rods, those up to 44 inches in length and still provides plenty of room for accessories and smaller ice fishing rod and reel combinations.
It’s designed to float when zipped, and the longer design is more versatile than ever protecting those longer ice rods with a drop in concept, so you do not have to break down your reels.
There are two external large pockets for other gear and it has a zippered storage compartment that compliments other Lakewood items, such as utility boxes.
Internal customizable foam helps hold rods securely in place and heavy duty ABS construction makes this case the ideal storage solution to strap on to an ATV, UTV or snowmobile and know your gear is protected. Multiple tie-down points and webbing carry handles make transport a breeze.
Everyone that’s stepped foot on ice has dealt with conventional boot grips or traction devices that come up short of what they’re intended to do.
They slip off, break, and most frustrating, are usually hard to put on. That changes with the next generation of ice traction device: the IceSpike.
New this season, IceSpike grips now have their threads tweaked for even better traction. With IceSpike installed in your favorite insulated boots, it’s now easier and safer to get where you want to go.
They bite incredibly well on glare ice and they’ll keep you positioned in place when augering holes on slick ice. The best part, IceSpike has no chains, straps or coils to interfere with driving your vehicle, either. It’s just top traction.
